FROM THEN, TO NOW

Austin has changed since May 2008 when we opened. Then, Austin’s downtown was smaller, its cycling infrastructure was nascent, and our staff knew just about every cyclist-at least road riders. Now, Austin is among the largest US cities, with a burgeoning bike path network and a vibrant cycling community second to none. While we still know a lot of “roadies,” we know more commuters, mountain bikers, adventure cyclists, gravel racers, and little tykes on bikes than ever.

Lance Armstrong and Bart Knaggs had a vision when conceiving an urban core bike shop in the early 2000s. It had to be cool, yes, but also a hub for everything cycling in one of the country’s best outdoor towns.

And so Mellow Johnny's, its name taken from a play on the Tour de France leader's jersey, the Maillot Jaune, was born. From day one, the goal was simple: create more than just a bike shop, but a gathering place where Austin's cycling community could connect, grow, and thrive together.

We first opened in the warehouse district, quickly becoming part of Austin’s growing cycling scene. As the city evolved, so did we. In 2023, we moved to The Roundabout at the north end of the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, right at the heart of the new Austin.

Now we’re surrounded by what makes this city special: the Butler Hike and Bike Trail, the Lance Armstrong Bikeway, Barton Springs Pool, and neighbors like Butler Pitch and Putt. It’s a spot that connects us to Austin’s outdoors and the community we’ve always been proud to serve.

We're a neighborhood bike shop with a global brand. Inside, you'll find top brands like Cannondale, BMC, Trek, Giordana, Assos, Shimano, as well as our Mellow Johnny's branded gear. We also offer award-winning bicycle service and repair, Retül bike fitting services, and rent bikes for those folks visiting Austin or locals wanting to try something new.

But being a bike shop has always meant more than products and services. We’re deeply rooted in Austin’s cycling community, supporting events and causes like the Livestrong Challenge, The LeadOut Foundation, Kids On Bikes In Parks, and Austin's oldest cycling club, Violet Crown.

Whether you're just getting started or you're a seasoned pro, we're here to make cycling approachable and exciting for everyone. From kids taking their first ride to elite racers chasing their next PR, we've got something for every cyclist.
