Lance
Armstrong came to his first Tour de France in 1993 a 21 year old US National
Champion just 10 months into his pro career. This Tour was to be a “learning
experience” for him. But from day one his mind was set on a stage win, and was
chasing it with conviction. Lance was in good form, having just won the Thrift
Drug Triple Crown, including the American Championship. His moment came in
Stage 8 from Chálons-sur-Marne to the historic city of Verdun, marking every
attack and joining the final break of six racers including his Mexican rival
Raul Alcala. With the peloton quickly approaching, the group was winding up the
pace, launching several mini attacks 1k from the finish. In the final 100
meters, Lance found himself trapped against the barriers. When Ronan Pensec
swerved, Lance shot the gap in the final 40 meters and surged past the line for
the win. This Texas question mark was now the youngest stage winner ever.
